What's  New

 In Our Office ?

April 6 - 8, 2006

The Moss Team attended the Ontario Dental Association Annual Spring Meeting in Toronto.  Yes the tulips and forsithyas are blooming in Southern Ontario, but the weather was brutal.

Dr. Moss attended courses on Prosthodontics (crowns and bridges), Endodontics (treating abscessed teeth) and Paedodontics (treating children).

Lesson from Prosthodontics:  Although patients often demand all - porcelain crowns because of their beautiful cosmetics, the proven, most trouble free crown remains the porcelain fused to gold metal.  Newer porcelain - zirconia crowns may prove to be the alternative for people who insist on all - ceramic crowns, but they have only been around several years so the jury is still out.  The zirconia material so far has proven so strong that it is often used as the core abutment on implants replacing missing teeth where cosmetics is important.

Lesson from Endodontics:  There have been no major changes in this field recently, but the future is extremely exciting.  The future treatment for abscessed teeth will include growing new nerves and blood vessels in a dead tooth from stem cells placed inside the tooth.

Complete teeth are now being grown from stem cells in the research lab, but like in the real mouth, it takes many years to grow a tooth.  This means that for the forseeable future replacing a missing tooth will still require implants or bridges or removable partial dentures.

Lesson from Paedodontics:  Screaming children who whine and throw temper tantrums in the dental office are never easy to deal with, especially when they require many fillings or other dental treatment to avoid toothaches.

Techniques developed by experts over decades of experience are often successful so that the child does not have to be knocked out with general anesthesia.  The experts agree that children behave better and respond to treatment better when parents are not present in the dental treatment room.

This course was so interesting that I am ordering video's to share with family and friends, because we all could use some help in dealing with difficult people whether they are 2 years old or 82.

The rest of the Moss Team focused on courses ranging from the latest research and techniques on Whitening Teeth to Managing and Resolving Conflict.

The Tooth Whitening course confirmed that we are using the materials and techniques that are proven safe and effective.

The Conflict Management course was good at describing the way conflict can arise because different people can have different ways of seeing and interpreting situations.  The solutions to managing conflict can fill an encyclopedia and are as varied as there are people, although this lecturer was able to simplify it to 5 basic rules.

They particularly enjoyed Anita Jupp's lecture on the importance of focusing on personal care as critical to good patient treatment.  The old adage still holds true:  people don't care how much you know until they know how much you care.  Her approach to team building was extremely motivational and uplifting.

Dr. Alex Moss introduces dental implants with the new " TiUNITE surface " to his patients.

The latest published research shows the patented TiUnite surface to produce the fastest, strongest integration and support of bone formation of all implant materials tested.

Producing leading edge products is why Nobel Biocare implants outsell all other brands of implants in the  world combined.

DENTAL IMPLANTS are now the gold standard in replacing missing teeth.

Dr. Alex Moss, Irene Culina and Shannon O'Brien attended a three day Nobel Biocare course in Toronto on surgically implanting metal roots to replace missing teeth.

Nobel Biocare pioneered the development of dental implants in the 1970's, introducing the first metal root that actually integrated (became one) with the jaw bone .   New porcelain teeth could easily be placed on these metal roots, restoring the beautiful smile that only a full set of teeth can make.  Having all your teeth enhances the ability to chew properly, thereby reducing the chronic tenderness of the jaw joints and facial muscles that is caused by chewing with missing teeth.

Dr. Moss started using dental implants to support prosthetic teeth in the mid 1990's.  As in any high tech field, there are ongoing advances and improvements in the field of dental implants.  This course ensures that the latest, state of the art materials and techniques are used in this office.

If you have unsightly gaps, loose dentures or broken down teeth, ask us if implants would be a good option for you.

We are buzzing with excitement about our new Sirona (Siemen's)

DIGITAL X-RAY  System, the OrthoPhos Plus DS.

Digital X-rays provide the lowest possible radiation dose.  They require up to 90% less radiation than regular X-rays, yet produce enhanced diagnostic accuracy.

We are the first general dentist office in Canada to provide world leading Sirona Digital Panoramic TSA x-rays.

TSA (Transversal Slicing) provides sequential images, like CAT scans, of the teeth and jaws.  This enhances decision-making during diagnosis and treatment planning in all aspects of dentistry.

It increases the success of treatments such as implants, surgery, bridges, root canals and temporo-mandibular joint / headache problems.

This enhances our ability to help you achieve your optimum oral health.
